The idea of setting up a company to design and market paper models and paper craft was conceived back in early 2004. The objective is to design paper models and craft that have a strong and rich Singaporean cultural heritage. For about nine months, from what little time that could be squeezed between a full-time job, a paper model prototype was created. It was a row of three Singapore shophouses. With its first product, PaperBricks Design was officially registered as a company on 15 Feb 2005.

Around May 2005, the model was on sale at the Chinatown Heritage Centre in Singapore Chinatown. At around the same time, the model was available on eBay too.

Then, in Nov 2005, PaperBricks Design was approached by a teacher from a local secondary school to design a paper model of their administrative block. This paper model kit was to be a gift item for their 50th school anniversary and sold 2,000 copies. Subsequently, out of goodwill, another 2 highly detailed models were designed and donated to the school.

In 2008, feeling unsatisfied with the details in the first shophouse paper model, it was decided to revemp the entire model from scratch. Also instead of just one model, a second model would be added to the product line. Due to many reasons, the two new models were finally ready in 2012 and were brought to market in 2013.
